Description

Performs histology procedures (embedding, sectioning, staining) to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease; Performs limited tissue grossing following training with UHN Pathology Department, reviews and collates quality control activities; ensures various laboratory equipment is functioning properly.

Qualifications

Performs the following duties/responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Receives and prepares all laboratory specimens submitted for laboratory testing. Prepares accurate documentation of specimens and result
  • Performs all requested laboratory test procedures as written in laboratory procedure manuals
  • Trouble-shoots equipment and/or procedure difficulties and accesses service personnel as require
  • Reviews equipment and procedure status with Laboratory Manager on a regular basis
  • Reports test results to physicians or their delegates in an accurate and timely form. Expected to provide assistance to technologists on checking questionable results when needed
  • Participates in the duty roster as posted. Shifts may include days, evenings, weekends and nights
  • Responsible for maintaining Quality Control program in their respective department including monitoring and documentation on a weekly basis. Is expected to implement and document appropriate corrective action and report same to Laboratory Manager and to the Laboratory Director
  • Ensures daily statistics are maintained and submits month end statistics to Laboratory Manager
  • Monitors and reviews inventory levels and informs Laboratory Manager of ordering needs
  • Ensures equipment maintenance is completed as required and maintains records
  • Ensures the training of new personnel is completed according to laboratory procedures
  • Oversees external Quality Control and Quality Assurance programs relating to their department. Responsible for: test completion; results compilation; report completion; review with Laboratory Manager prior to results submission; reviews results upon receipt works together with Laboratory Manager to implement corrective action as required
  • Evaluates new methods including initial research, start-up data, procedure manual preparation and training of staff
  • Responsible for ensuring procedure manual(s) are current and for notification of needed changes to Laboratory Manager
  • Responsible for efficient organization of workflow in their department
  • May be required to assume some management duties in the absence of the Laboratory Manager
  • Accountable to integrate the principles of patient safety and risk management into daily work roles and responsibilities
  • All other duties related to laboratory technology as required
