ABOUT THE ROLE
Under the direct supervision of the Manager – Mikinaak Gagiigidowin – Indigenous Cultural Safety & Education, Indigenous Health, N’doo’owe Binesi, the Indigenous Cultural Safety & Resolution Specialist is responsible for providing culturally safe and trauma-informed support and right-based supports to Indigenous clients/residents, family members, and staff who have experienced racism, discrimination, or culturally unsafe care.
The Resolution Specialist ensures that Indigenous voices, experiences, worldviews, and rights are centred throughout all stages of the concerns, complaints and incident resolution process, from initial intake, assessment through to facilitated resolution, documentation, follow-up, and organizational learning. The role also identifies patterns, systemic barriers, and process gaps that contribute to inequity; providing recommendations for organizational improvement; and supporting the implementation of new structures, practices, and accountability mechanisms that advance cultural safety and anti-racism across St. Joseph’s Care Group (SJCG).
As a key connector and cultural knowledge holder, the Resolution Specialist works closely with Human Resources and Quality to strengthen culturally safe practices and improve organizational responses to racism and discrimination. The role collaborates with teams to ensure concerns are addressed in a manner consistent with Two-Eyed Seeing, Just Culture, and Reconciliation commitments. The Resolution Specialist will advance SJCG’s vision of Care, Compassion, and Commitment, providing safe, welcoming, and respectful experiences for all while actively addressing system racism and discrimination.

WHAT YOU BRING
Education/Experience:
- An individual who is of Indigenous ancestry with an in-depth understanding of Indigenous culture and tradition, worldview, history, ceremonies, healing practices and language and the impacts of colonialism on health and wholistic wellness
- An individual who possesses a strong understanding of systemic Indigenous-specific racism in healthcare, and has experience in utilizing culturally safe, trauma-informed approaches to addressing harm and conflict
- Minimum Undergraduate degree in a health or social services field (with an Indigenous focus), health administration, Indigenous studies, social sciences, or a related discipline with a minimum of three years of clinical work with in a community setting; an equivalent combination of education and lived/professional experience will be considered
- Master’s degree is preferred but not required
- Current registration with a professional college or professional regulatory body (if applicable)
- Specialized training as related to the field is preferred i.e., conflict resolution, incident investigation
- Experience working in healthcare environments and knowledge of policies, legislation, and accreditation standards relating to cultural safety, human rights, and client relations
- Demonstrated experience in investigations, conflict resolution, mediation, or restorative practices, preferably in cases involving Indigenous specific racism or discrimination
- Experience developing, implementing and sustaining network/partnerships
Skills/Abilities:
- Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly, effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing, while maintaining culturally inclusivity and respect
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust, maintain confidentiality, and support individuals in distress
- Advanced skills in facilitation, conflict resolution, restorative practices, and interest-based problem solving
- Ability to establish and nurture effective and collaborative working relationships with a variety of partners including community partners within the Indigenous community
- Demonstrates knowledge of the Health Ethics Guide developed by the Catholic Health Alliance of Canada (CHAC), First Nations principles of data ownership, control, access, and possession (OCAP), and Accreditation Canada/Health Standard Organization British Columbia Cultural Safety and Humility Standard.
- Well versed in The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s final report (specifically the healthcare calls to action), the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, In Plain Sight: Addressing Indigenous –Specific Racism and Discrimination in Healthcare and adult learning principles and practices
- Passionate about contributing to positive social change and commitment to anti-oppression and anti-racism in the healthcare system
- Commitment to reconciliation, equity, anti-racism, and continuous learning
- Demonstrated ability to remain grounded, balanced, and resilient when working with emotionally complex situations
- Strong time management, analytical/critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision making skills with the ability to identify systemic issues and recommend solutions
- Ability to work independently, interdependently, and participate as a contributing member of a variety of teams within the workplace while managing competing priorities, and adapting to evolving organizational needs
- Ability to support the multi-faith context
- Knowledge of social services, health services, and cultural practices, particularly related to Indigenous Peoples
- Proficiency with office software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, as well as Canva and electronic medical record systems i.e., Meditech, EMHWare and Point Click Care
- Ability to speak Anishinaabemowin or Anishininimowin is preferred
- Demonstrated regular attendance at work
Assets:
- Ongoing involvement with Indigenous culture and traditions, comprehensive knowledge, understanding and awareness of Indigenous traditions, ceremony, teachings, and practices
- Experience in community-based care models and collaboration with interprofessional teams
Conditions of Employment:
- This position shall be conditional upon a satisfactory Criminal Record & Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC) where indicated, to ensure the absence of relevant criminal convictions.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings or weekends, to meet service needs
- Will be required to travel to various work locations, providing own transportation
